What to Expect During Your Appointment
with the Osteopath or Physiotherapist
Some people are nervous about seeing an Osteopath or a Physiotherapist so we hope that the following information will reassure you.
Before you see the practitioner you can ask the receptionist for information. You can always take a friend or relative with you into the treatment room if you wish.
On your first visit, the practitioner will ask you a series of questions about yourself and your health, both past and present; the questions will be about your medical history (operations and illnesses); about any changes in your health and about whether you take any medication. He will also need to know your doctor's name and address. Also, before the first examination, you will be asked to sign a form of consent to authorize the practitioner to proceed.
In order to make an accurate evaluation the practitioner will have to examine not just the areas where you have problems but other parts that may be connected to the problem areas. This will involve undressing to your underwear but you will be offered a gown. The gown is removed during examination and treatment. You may be asked to perform simple movements so that the practitioner can decide where your problems are. Further examination will normally take place while you lie on the examination couch. During this time the practitioner will carry out a series of tests, for example: your blood pressure, reflexes, joint mobility and muscle strength.
Having examined you thoroughly, the practitioner will discuss his evaluation with you and, with your agreement, carry out some form of treatment. At that time the risks and benefits of the treatment will be explained to you. For some conditions osteopathy or physiotherapy is not suitable. If this is the case for you the practitioner will tell you why it is not appropriate. If during the treatment you have any questions do not hesitate to ask the practitioner to stop so you can make your enquiries. It is very important that you should understand what is happening during the treatment.
If you need to bring your children with you, please bring someone to look after them whilst you are in the consulting room as we are not able to offer a child crèche facility.
At the Langham Clinic it is our aim to treat you and your children in the most successful and comfortable way we can. The therapeutic intention is orientated to be non invasive and therefore we do not utilise high velocity thrust treatment. You or your children may be given appropriate ergonomic advice and exercises.
